POWER To Host 5th Annaual Golf Tournament May 2 at Indian Canyons
(April 9, 2008) The Palm Spring Power will be hosting its fifth annual golf tournament to raise money for the Palm Springs Power Foundation and Palm Springs USO. This annual event will be held Friday, May 2 at the Indian Canyons Golf Resort with a noon shotgun start.
The purpose of this event is to raise funds to provide food, transportation and housing throughout the summer season. This year the event will also raise money for Palm Springs USO, which assists active and retired members of the military and their families as they travel through Palm Springs International Airport.
“This tournament is always a lot of fun as Indian Canyons is one of the most beautiful courses in the desert,” says Andrew Starke, President of the Palm Springs Power Baseball Club. “With Bud Girls passing out free drinks, 2008 is sure to be our best tournament yet.

Arizona Winter League Players Report on Sunday
150 Baseball Players from 35 States and 4 Countries Set for 2nd AWL Season
(Dublin, CA. January 22, 2008) The six team Arizona Winter League (AWL) welcomes players as they report on Sunday, January 27th to Yuma, Arizona. Expanding to six teams and adding Palm Springs and Blythe, CA in 2008 there will be 150 players from 35 states and four countries showcasing their abilities for professional organizations. Over half of the players have professional experience including Major League and AAA in the U.S. along with several with top levels of experience in Mexico, Japan, and European leagues. In addition, there are players recently graduated from many of the finest collegiate programs in the country and many with lower levels of minor league experience.
The only winter league for professional, or aspiring professional, baseball players in the U.S., the AWL is a showcase minor league that provides players an opportunity to further develop their skills in the off-season and to showcase their abilities for professional teams searching for players. Last year over 50 players from the Arizona Winter League signed professional contracts with Independent Leagues, foreign professional leagues, and also with the San Francisco Giants, Baltimore Orioles, Kansas City Royals, and Toronto Blue Jays.
This year, the AWL will feature an even higher level of experience including players such as major leaguer Jeff Tam, Independent Player of the Year Darryl Brinkley, Mike Thompson of the Kansas City Royals minor league system who was a Midwest League All-Star last year, former First-Team SEC outfielder and Padre 4th round pick Michael Campbell, and one of the most intriguing players in former NFL Linebacker with the Cincinnati Bengals Dwayne Levels who is a right-handed power pitcher and slugging outfielder.
The six teams will be managed and coached by former major league stars such as Mike Marshall (Dodgers), Cory Snyder (Indians), Garry Templeton (Cards, Padres), Jeffrey Leonard (Giants, Mariners), Les Lancaster (Cubs), Rusty Meacham (Royals), and Steve Yeager (Dodgers). The Opening Night for the AWL is a full slate of games in Yuma, Palm Springs, and Blythe on Friday, February 1st and the 21-game season concludes with a March 1st Championship game.

Returns to Managing in Minor League Ball
(Blythe, CA. December 12, 2007) The Blythe Heat, members of the Arizona Winter League, the premier off-season development league for minor league players in the United States, announced today that two-time major league all-star Jeffrey Leonard has been signed as the new field manager of the Heat. The 14 year major league veteran returns to managing as he previously skippered the Sonoma County Crushers in the Western League.
“We believe that Jeffrey Leonard will be a superb manager for the Heat” said Kevin Outcalt, Commissioner of the Arizona Winter League. ““He’s an experienced minor league manager, played at the highest levels of the game, and has been a baseball instructor with his own amateur academy for years. His intensity and passion for the game will not only be felt by his players, but throughout Blythe as he intends to be very active in the community.”
Leonard, 52, was signed as an amateur free agent out of high school in 1973 by the Los Angeles Dodgers. He rose rapidly through their farm system as a complete player known both for his defense, leading the California League in outfield assists at Bakersfield, and his dominating presence at the plate as he led the AAA Pacific Coast League in hits and batting average while with the Albuquerque Dukes. Joining the Dodgers in 1977 as a 21 year old he began a 14-year major league career where he compiled almost 1500 hits and hit 144 home runs while playing for five teams, appearing in two National League Championship Series, was voted an all-star twice, finished in the National League MVP Top 20 voting twice, and had such an outstanding National League Championship Series in 1987 that he was voted MVP even though his Giants lost to the St. Louis Cardinals. He began his managing and coaching career in 2000 in the independent Western Baseball League.
“I am thrilled to have this opportunity to manage and help develop professional baseball players” said Leonard. “It will be exciting to bring professional baseball to Blythe and continue the tradition that the Arizona Winter League has developed in helping professional players move up in their careers. I’m looking forward to putting together a fine team, getting to know the community, and getting involved with the fans and with the Blythe youth sports organizations as well.”
About the Blythe Heat
The Blythe Heat are one of six teams in the Arizona Winter League which will begin its second season of play on February 1, 2008. The Heat are an expansion team and will be playing their home games at Alexander Stadium in Blythe on every Friday and Saturday throughout the month of February. About the Arizona Winter League
The Arizona Winter League is an off-season league for professional, or aspiring, professional baseball players to develop their skills and advance their careers. A short season lasting approximately five weeks, It is the only winter league for professional players in the United States, and last year produced over 50 players who signed professional contracts, including three with major league organizations. Arizona Winter League teams include the Yuma Scorpions, San Diego Surf Dawgs, Palm Springs Chill, Canada Miners, Sonora Pilots, and the Blythe Heat. The season consists of 21 games per team, begins in late January and ends in early March with playoffs and a Championship game. Each team will have a maximum of 24-player roster.

AWL Announces Expansion to Blythe, California
Blythe Club Added As Part of 2008 Slate of Teams
(Blythe, CA. November 18, 2007) The Arizona Winter League (AWL) announced today that an agreement has been reached with the City of Blythe, CA and a partnership with Blythe Little League baseball to bring an Arizona Winter League expansion team to the city for the 2008 season which beings in this coming January.
"We're thrilled to be selected by the Arizona Winter League as they expand," said Blythe Mayor Robert Crain. "This is great baseball with professional caliber players and a wonderful family and sports fan activity for all of our residents and visitors during the winter.
With a name and former major league manager to be announced next week, the team will play nine home games in February on most Fridays and Saturdays during the 35 day season running from January 28th to March 2nd. They will be on the road during the week playing in Yuma, Arizona. With rosters filled with experienced professional and collegiate players the ballclub will play their home games at Alexander Field Stadium, which has hosted top level amateur baseball.
The City of Blythe is making improvements to the playing field and spectator areas and the Blythe Little League organization will be running the stadium operations during the games. In addition, renowned Blythe baseball coach Gilbert Guilin will be a member of the coaching staff of the and his sons Gilbert, Jr. and Mario will be vying for spots on the team.
"Blythe is a wonderful location for Arizona Winter League expansion" said Kevin Outcalt, Commissioner of the Arizona Winter League. "This is a great baseball town with a fine tradition that has produced top level amateur baseball and professional players such as Terry Whitfield, it is a mecca for winter visitors from around the U.S. and Canada, and the City and Blythe Little League Baseball have been great partners to work with.
The Arizona Winter League is comprised of players with professional experience or prospects that are hoping to sign professional contracts. Last year over 62% of all Arizona Winter League players left with professional contracts for the 2007 season. Three were signed by major league organizations including the San Francisco Giants, the Kansas City Royals, and the Baltimore Orioles. Arizona Winter League managers, coaches, and instructors are primarily former major league players and include, Garry Templeton (former San Diego Padre and St. Louis Cardinal great and four time National League All-Star, Mike Marshall (L.A. Dodger All-Star and member of the 1988 World Series Championship team), Cory Snyder (former Cleveland Indian star slugger), Les Lancaster (former Chicago Cub pitcher and All-Rookie team), and many more.
